For all of you with questions about what Second Glance is, how we work, etc., this post is for you...
{What We Are}
In a word, simply: conscientious. If there is a way to shop while honoring the conscience, we would be that way.
Not so long ago, “resale” meant “thrift” and thrift shops were dingy little stores hidden behind dated storefronts. There was a fair amount of shame involved with shopping in them – it indicated something unpleasant about who you were. Pleasant people shopped at Nordstrom and might make a yearly pilgrimage to Macy’s in California or Saks in New York.
Fortunately, our collective social conscience has begun to shift, and our awareness awakened. We’ve started to think about social responsibility, respecting the environment, minimizing our carbon footprint, the indecent level of consumerism and consumption present in our culture, the struggle of the locally-owned company, trade deficits….
Can we live more simply? Can we consume less, recycle more, support each other in better, more mutually beneficial ways; can we live our lives with a global mindset – remembering that every decision we make contributes to a wave of impact?
How can we live conscientiously while honoring our inner fashionista? Must we give her up?
******
We don’t think so.
We believe that resale shops like Second Glance are a wonderful way to experience the thrill of fashion while remaining socially responsible.
We could all drive to the city to our favorite department store or boutique for that piece our wardrobe is missing…
but
when we have the chance to support a “green” method of shopping, a locally-owned business, and save gas, why wouldn’t we?
After all, what we’re wearing doesn’t determine who we are – the choices we make, the way we live our lives, do.
And this girl wants to be a girl who makes responsible choices that impact our planet now and in the future in positive ways. I don’t want my legacy to be one of thoughtless consumption with a “look good at any cost” attitude.
Isn’t that the kind of girl we all want to be?
Shop Resale. It makes our world a better place to be.
{How to Participate}
There are two ways to participate in the Second Glance experience.
One way is to shop with us; we’re open 7 days a week and we truly love your presence in our shop. The Glancing Girls (shop girls) are happy to help you find what you’re searching for, offer fashion advice, or just be a friendly face. Second Glance is not just a storefront and a cash register – it’s meant to be an experience, a little bit of heaven in your day.
The other way is to consign with us. We take consignments 7 days a week, without appointments.
Remember, we’re not a thrift shop. Second Glance is a specialty resale shop. To that end, we take seasonal items only (don’t bring your winter coats in June), and only items with labels that are desired – think about your favorite labels, that’s what will sell in our shop.
Clothing must be clean, pressed, neatly folded, and only gently worn. We won’t be able to take your item if it is in need of cleaning, regardless of how fabulous it may be. This is just an indication of the respect present in the relationship between Second Glance and our lovely consignors.
Items that we are able to consign stay on our floor for 60 days. Items that weren’t sold within that period are donated to the ARC of Benton County (in part to make room for new merchandise and in part because we’re deeply committed to being a charitably minded business). When your item sells, you receive 40% of the price the item sold for.
Your “credit” is electronically stored in your account and you may pick it up anytime we’re open. There is no difference between the amount you receive if you choose to take cash or use shop credit. If you have $400 on your account – we’ll gladly write you a check for that amount or welcome you to use the same amount in the shop.
What a creative way to generate a wardrobe budget, right?!
My own closet is revolving – perhaps yours should be, too!
Questions? Just give us a jingle! 541.753.8011, we’re open 10am – 6pm Monday thru Saturday, and 12 noon – 5pm on Sundays.
xoxo,
