Because sunny spring days are slowing creeping towards us, I thought I would do a tutorial on how to make some high waisted jean shorts. A few weeks ago, I was shopping in Portland and saw a super cute pair of high waisted Levi shorts…and then I looked at the price tag and cringed–60 bucks for a pair! I knew that I could make some that were just as cute for much less money. I found a perfect pair of high waisted jeans for a fraction of the price and set out to make my shorts.

Here’s how you can make some of your own:

What you need:

• One pair of high waisted “mom” jeans
• Scissors (preferably fabric scissors)
• Sharpie/Pencil
• Optional: fabric for pockets, studs, bleach & a spray bottle (I’ll explain later)

Instructions:

1. Put on your jeans & mark how far you want them to go with the pencil or sharpie. *Remember: you can always cut more off, so start a little longer than you want. Also, if you want them to be cuffed like mine, mark 2 or 3 inches longer.
2. Take off the jeans and cut away! To make sure you aren’t mooning the world in your new jeans, cut them at a diagonal so the back is longer than the front.
3. For mine, I wanted them to be cuffed, so I cuffed them while they were on, pinned them, and sewed a couple stitches on the outside hemline so they wouldn’t un-cuff.
   



4. This is the step where you get to be creative! Try finding a cute floral or tribal fabric and adding it to the back pockets, adding studs for a grungy look, or using a spray bottle and bleach to make them retro acid wash (wet the jeans,wring out the extra water, spray on the bleach, let sit for 10 minutes, and then wash them in the washing machine).



5. Voila!

Now you have awesome high waisted shorts for a fraction of the price of ones from the store. My favorite parts? Because you made them, no one will have the same ones AND this is a super sustainable practice!

Resale shopping {and vintage shopping} is fashion’s newest darling.

Everyone’s doing it.

Everyone’s singing the praises of fashion gone green.

Resale boutique owners are even getting their own television series out of it.

Like Shareen Mitchell, who was just profiled in the NY Times.

Resale shopping, that is.

Yesterday, women from Corvallis and Portland combined forces and took the pdx resale scene by storm!

I’m working on my Christmas list … the gift-giving part of it, I mean.

We draw names in my family, which means I have 2 siblings to think about, my parents, an assorted number of friends, and then people I just like remembering during the holidays … my barista, the mail person, my hair dresser, etc.

For the last several years, I’ve made it my priority to gift sustainably.

Meaning: when I can I give resale. I keep my eyes open all year for fabulous boots in the right size for my sister, I give my mom a gift certificate for her favorite resale shop … when I can’t support the resale industry, I support fair trade, locally-owned small businesses, etc.

And when all else fails, I make gifts! This comes in especially handy for individuals like the mailman who I don’t know very well. I’m not at all crafty, so when I say I make gifts, I mean I put edible items together in some kind of cute presentation.

This s’mores idea is right up my alley:

I thought I might clarify just one little thing.

Although I post images of clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes, etc. from all across the internet and from a wide variety of places {department stores, couture designers, etsy shops, etc.}, I still find most of my true loves in resale shops.

{of course, this is a practice I highly endorse}

I often spot a piece that I love but has a price tag out of my reach, or I just feel like obtaining it in a more sustainable way. I’ll keep an image of that item in my memory and search for either something very like it {or even the very item itself} gently*loved in a resale shop.

But I do admit to enjoying supporting independent boutiques, etsy shops, and local designers.

And, of course, who can resist a posh department store from time to time?

I just try to remember the values I hold – shopping locally, shopping sustainably, and committing myself to recycling what no longer works for me!
